Overview
“Coach Carter” is based on a true story of Coach Ken Carter, a controversial former high school basketball coach for the Richmond Oilers. After being offered the job at Richmond High School, Coach Carter implemented his own set of rules which all members of the team members must obey. Coach Carter had believed that the game of basketball was a privilege and that their academics were more of a priority. Due to the poor performance in team’s academic work, he introduced a contract which strictly outlines each team member maintaining a 2.3 GPA, attending all classes and along with appropriate dress code for games. Being under Coach Carter’s supervision improved not only the cooperation among teammates but making the Oilers to go undefeated. However, when the overconfident team's behavior begins to wander away and Carter learns that too many players are doing poorly in class, he takes immediate action. To the outrage of the team, the school and the community, Carter cancels all team activities and locks the court until the team shows acceptable academic improvement. In the ensuing debate, Carter fights to keep his methods, determined to show the boys that they need to rely on more than sports for their futures. Eventually, finds he has affected them more profoundly than he ever expected.
