Traits & Behaviour
The traits that Coach Carter shows evidence include his complete determination to revolutionize Richmond High School’s basketball team. As an experienced, knowledgeable and discipline coach, before respecting each other, he ensured that all team members respected themselves. Fearlessness, focused, confident, were also many of the few Coach Carter had incorporated in his role. Coach Carter is highly focused on the task at hand and is doing everything possible to achieve it. Carter’s move meets resistance from every angle: his team, parents, teachers and the School Board. But he is willing to risk his job to make a better future for his students. It’s that power of conviction that ultimately wins over his students. As a result, they take responsibility for helping each other improve their academic scores. He is determined to turn his team into successful student athletes and has secured the support of other teachers to help them achieve the goals.
Coach Carter tries to motivate his basketball players by taking disciplinary measures such as closing the gym for training. He adopts the transformational leadership style to make sure everyone, regardless of the motivation levels and ability, working towards improving their GPA or helping teammates do so. The team were an informal group before Coach Carter became involved and were not performing as they should. Although, you may think of Carter being too harsh or intimidating, the progress from this had shown nothing more than positives changes. Eventually, even though many team members struggled to conform they eventually succeeded in their goals.
